Mandatory Electronic Prescribing

On March 27, 2013, amendments to Title 10 NYCRR Part 80 Rules and Regulations on Controlled Substances authorized pharmacies in New York State to annotate, dispense and electronically archive electronic prescriptions for controlled substances in Schedules II through V received from a practitioner's certified electronic prescribing computer application. On March 15, 2015, the electronic prescribing of both controlled and non-controlled substances will be mandatory for practitioners.

We anticipate that this will not be an easy transition for providers and a number of questions have been raised with respect to implementation, including concerns about meeting federal security requirements. LeadingAge NY is currently in discussion with DOH and the Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement (BNE) and is looking to schedule a webinar sometime in August to provide education and guidance on the requirement. In addition, LeadingAge NY staff is participating in a work group with DOH and other associations to examine the implications of the new requirement on providers.
