Nursing Home Sprinkler Waiver

LeadingAge has learned that the anticipated CMS sprinkler waiver may not be in place by Aug. 13, 2013 when all nursing homes are required to be fully sprinklered.  The waiver would have allowed an extension of two years (with a possible consideration of an additional year) in situations where nursing homes were either replacing their existing building or where extensive renovation projects were being conducted that would justify a temporary delay in the installation until the renovation was completed.  In order for a waiver to be considered, a facility would have had to submit a project plan for the replacement or renovation.  At this time, it is unclear as to when CMS will issue guidance related to the waiver, but we will advise members as soon as we are made aware of any further details.
