Accessible Services to People with Disabilities

DOH has issued a reminder to providers of their obligation under various federal (Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act) and state (NYS Human Rights Law, Public Health Law) laws to ensure that health care services are fully and equally accessible to persons with disabilities. The Dear Administrator letter emphasizes that an individual with a disability must have access to the same health care services that someone without a disability receives. Full and equal access to care can be achieved through the following means: 1) Removing physical barriers, 2) Providing auxiliary aids and services, and 3) Making reasonable changes to policies, practices and procedures.
