Are Your Patients Eligible for a Free Air Conditioner or Fan?

The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a federally funded program that issues heating benefits to supplement a household's annual energy cost through the New York State Office of Aging. Typically we think of HEAP in regards to heating or heat related energy emergencies. However, there is a Cooling Assistance component that provides for the purchase and installation of air conditioners or fans to eligible households. Now with the summer heat fast approaching, older adults are particularly susceptible to extreme temperatures. Please note, patients who are HEAP eligible and have a medical need may be eligible to receive an air conditioner or fan, including installation—free of charge. Funding is limited, so the air conditioners and fans will be provided on a first come, first serve basis

Contact your local department of social services or county office for aging for more information on eligibility and application procedures. The HEAP pre-screening eligibility can be viewed here.
