Funding Available for the Health Workforce Retraining Program/Initiative

The Department of Health (DOH) has posted a Request for Application (RFA) on Health Workforce Retraining Program/Initiative, also referred to as the Health Workforce Retraining Initiative (HWRI). According to the RFA, “DOH in consultation with the NYS Dept. of Labor is soliciting applications from organizations proposing to train or retrain health industry workers, or individuals laid off from health industry jobs, to obtain new positions, meet the new job requirements of existing positions, or otherwise meet the requirements of the changing public health and health care market and the diversity of the populations seeking health care services.” The RFA includes that efforts will require the existing workforce to be trained on emerging models of collaborative care, focus on population health needs, and work within interdisciplinary teams.

The purpose of the RFA and maximum regional funding amounts are outlined on page one through two. On page three are highlights of the “preferred application requirements” with additional points being added for meeting objectives such as, providing training in managed long term care or telehealth. On page four starts the project narrative and work plan outcomes which include the various areas for needed training. On page 21 of the RFA, it highlights completing the application with a review of the points awarded for each section.

The RFA award is up to $24.2M for a two year period. Questions are due May 23rd and answers will be posted on or about May 31st. Applications are due by June 27th.
