One local couple is helping people who often aren't able to say thank you in return.
Fran and Mario Antonelli volunteer at Sarah Neuman, a nursing home facility in Mamaroneck. The home's administrator, Sandra Mundy, says it's a challenge to find people like the Antonellis to come and volunteer.
"Having volunteers to be able to do those things when our caregivers can't always do that as often as we'd like, is really valuable," Mundy says.
For the Antoellis, it all started seven years ago when they brought Fran's mother Theresa in after she was diagnosed with dementia. The couple visited her nearly every day until she passed away five years later. They say they decided to go back to Sarah Neuman to volunteer on the day of her mother's funeral.
"I could not explain, why would I want to go back? Except we both felt we wanted to go back," says Fran. "So we started not really knowing if it was going to be a day or a week."
"It fulfills a need we see others have," says Mario.
