Governor Cuomo Orders Public Hearings on Employee Scheduling

On Saturday, Governor Cuomo directed the Commissioner of Labor to schedule public hearings on employee scheduling concerns. The Department of Labor (DOL) will hold these hearings to solicit public comment on how best to address "just-in-time," "call-in," or "on-call" scheduling, common practices that allow employers to schedule or cancel workers' shifts just hours before or even after they start.

Per the Governor’s announcement, the hearings will help guide leaders in "crafting sensible protections to provide New Yorkers with fair and predictable work schedules" and "give hard-working men and women a platform to have their voices heard."

The schedule for the public hearings is as follows:

  • Thurs., Sept. 28th in Albany;
  • Tues., Oct. 17th in New York City;
  • Thurs., Oct. 26th in Binghamton; and
  • Tues., Nov. 14th in Buffalo.

DOL will issue a notice identifying the specific times and locations for the hearings at a later date.
