Now Available: Free COVID-19 Tests for People Who Are Blind or Have Low Vision

On June 23rd, the White House launched a new initiative to expand the availability of COVID-19 testing options for people who are blind or have low vision, including the distribution of free at-home test kits that utilize audio step-by-step instructions and audio test results to be more accessible to these individuals.

Each individual may order two free, more accessible test kits online or by calling 1-800-232-0233. For those who need more than two tests, Medicare will pay for up to eight free over-the-counter COVID-19 tests per month. Those placing an order should be aware that they must have a compatible Bluetooth-enabled smartphone and be able to download and install the free app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to use these tests.

Because of limited supply, the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL) is requesting that individuals only order the new, more accessible tests if they do not have other options for using the standard COVID-19 tests, such as receiving assistance from another individual or using assistive technology, such as Aira or Be My Eyes.

The Disability Information and Access Line (DIAL) can provide additional assistance with ordering tests, understanding instructions and results, and identifying alternatives for those who cannot use an at-home test. The trained DIAL staff can be reached by email at DIAL@usaginganddisability.org or at 888-677-1199 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST.
