Virtual Advocacy Resources

In 2021, Virtual Advocacy tools such as letters, phone calls, and virtual meetings will be more important than ever. The State Capitol and Legislative Office Building are not permitting visitors and most legislative district offices are taking similar precautions. The good news is, advocacy no longer requires a trip to the State’s capital.  Your participation in legislative meetings may only require an hour or two of your time and you will be able to join legislative meetings from the comfort of your own workspace, with LeadingAge NY Resources at your finger tips!

Thank you to all who participated in our 2021 Virtual Advocacy Days! If you have not already done so, please be sure to fill out our Advocacy Engagement Form to let us know how it went! This new tool will allow LeadingAge NY to support and enhance member advocacy efforts by assisting with any necessary follow-up and tracking our advocacy reach.

LeadingAge NY encourages members to continue to set up phone calls or virtual meetings with your legislators, particularly if a lawmaker sits on the Health, Aging, Housing, or Finance Committees. If you'd like to have us be part of your discussion with lawmakers, LeadingAge NY staff would be happy to join you for your meetings. Additionally, if your organization would like assistance in setting up a Zoom for your legislative meeting, please contact Sarah Daly at Sdaly@leadingageny.org

If you are new to scheduling legislative meetings, LeadingAge NY has created this helpful how-to Legislative Scheduling Guide for your reference.

Additionally, our friends at Hinman Straub have developed a Guide to Virtual Advocacy and Six Tips to Achieve a Productive Virtual Meeting to help members prepare.

Advocacy materials, handouts and talking points are linked below for your use and reference throughout the 2021 budget cycle. You will want to use these materials to help educate your lawmakers on the challenges you and other providers face. Remember to check back occasionally, as any updated issue briefs will be posted here for your use.

Senate Committee appointments can be found here and Assembly Committee appointments can be found here. You can also find out who your lawmakers are, and which committees they sit on, by entering your information here.

On Feb. 2nd, LeadingAge NY hosted a State Budget and Advocacy Day Briefing to help members prepare for legislative meetings they had scheduled for our virtual advocacy days. We used this time to share and review our advocacy materials and highlight specific budget issues affecting different service lines. If you missed the briefing, you can click here to view the recordingPlease note that this briefing was delivered based on the Executive Budget Proposal as of 2/2/21.

Lastly, LeadingAge New York staff are happy to help you get involved in advocacy! Please reach out if you have questions, if you'd like to coordinate meetings with other providers in your area, or if you'd like to strategize which additional lawmakers from your region you could reach out to for a meeting.

Thank you in advance for your participation in advocacy during this critical time!
