The New CMS Quality Measures: What You Need to Know

Format: Audio conference

Date Recorded: December 7, 2011 (Length of session: 1 hour)

Program Summary:

In 2012, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin to report new quality measures (QMs) based on the MDS 3.0 resident assessment.  These new QMs will replace the MDS 2.0 QMs that currently appear on the Nursing Home Compare website and have remained static since January 2011.  In this session, we will provide details on how the new measures are calculated, review the new definitions of "short-stay" and "long-stay" and explain the differences between a resident "stay", a resident "episode" and "cumulative days in the facility".  We will also discuss how some of the measures are risk adjusted and provide an in-depth preview of three of the measures using resident scenarios to demonstrate who is likely to flag on each of the outcomes.

Target audience:

  • Administrators, Directors of Nursing, MDS Coordinators, Finance and other members of the interdisciplinary team

  • Kathy Pellatt, senior quality improvement analyst, EQUIP for Quality
