Consumer Information
Choosing the best care for yourself or a loved one is a daunting task, and you may well feel overwhelmed and confused at the array of options you encounter in long term care.
That’s why we at the New York Association of Homes & Services for the Aging have prepared this guide for you, the consumer, to help you make the best decisions for you and your family and friends.
Long term care is an evolving field, one that changes with the times, with government regulations and with the economy. This guide will introduce you to the continuum of care, from housing for independent seniors to home care, from assisted living on up through skilled nursing, and all the stops along the way. We’ll also introduce you to the continuing care retirement community, a campus-like setting that encompasses every level of care in one location, from independent housing to skilled nursing, and allows you to access the level you need, when you need it, without leaving your community.
Most importantly, when choosing long term care, there is no substitute for visiting a facility you’re considering. We’ve provided some questions for you to ask, but don’t limit yourself to those – when you’re looking at something as life-changing as long term care, there are no stupid questions.
Feel free to contact any our member organizations and facilities; each one will offer you the mission-driven values of our not-for-profit members. You’ll find their contact information in this guide. You’ll find more information on our Web site, www.nyahsa.org, under “Consumer Information.”
